Students reminded to mind their mental health upon return to school

Sep 4, 2026 | 9:04 PM

Stigma-Free Mental Health Society is asking students to be mindful of their mental health as classes return.

The organization recently launched its Young Minds Matter 2026: Rural Classroom Conversations campaign, which hopes to impact 10,000 students by year’s end.

Officials say they’ve already reached close to 6,500 and are putting a large focus on rural areas.

“Every student, regardless of where they live, deserves access to preventative mental health education and support,” says Andrea Paquette, CEO.

“By offering presentations virtually across Canada, as well as in person in select locations, we can reach young people in a way that is flexible and accessible. For rural communities in particular, virtual delivery helps remove geographic barriers and allows more students to take part in meaningful mental health conversations.”

The message has thus far been getting across through classroom visits, and through the society’s Student Mental Health Toolkit.

“As students begin another school year, we have an opportunity to make mental health part of the conversation from the very beginning,” adds Paquette.

“Preventative education matters. Young people need to know that talking about mental health is normal, that asking for help is a strength and that they are not alone.”
