Traffic light installation underway at Southlands intersection in Medicine Hat

Aug 26, 2026 | 8:58 AM

A Medicine Hat intersection is set to receive traffic lights this fall as development in the Southlands neighbourhood continues.

Work is underway to install traffic signals at South Boundary Road SE and Southlands Drive SE.

The City of Medicine Hat says the upgrade is needed because of growth in the area and the size and complexity of the intersection.

The intersection currently has rapid-flashing beacons to help pedestrians cross South Boundary Road.

Periodic lane closures will be required during construction.

Motorists are being asked to slow down, follow temporary speed limits and obey construction signage.

The installation is expected to be complete before the lights are activated, with the signals expected to be commissioned by mid-to-late October, weather permitting.

The lights will remain covered or operate in flashing mode before being activated to give motorists time to adjust to the change.

The city said it will announce the exact date the traffic signals will become active once it has been determined.
