YMCA confirms employee terminated after child injured at Medicine Hat daycare

The matter is now the subject of an active police investigation.

The YMCA says it is co-operating fully with the investigation but cannot provide details because the incident involves a child and the process must be allowed to proceed.

“The safety and wellbeing of children entrusted to our programs is our highest priority,” said the organization in a release.

The YMCA said any behaviour that causes harm to a child is unacceptable and contrary to its standards and values.

The organization also acknowledged the incident comes after John Millar Child Development Centre underwent additional oversight earlier this year following a separate serious incident.

The YMCA said it implemented corrective measures following that incident, including enhanced staff training and other steps, intended to strengthen child-safety practices.

“This incident involved a decision made by an individual employee that was unacceptable and contrary to the expectations and standards required of YMCA staff,” said the organization.

The YMCA said it remains committed to professional development and supervision for staff and will continue working with licensing authorities while meeting requirements and directions related to regulatory and investigative processes.

The organization said its focus remains on supporting the affected child and family, maintaining safe care for children currently attending the centre and ensuring appropriate oversight and accountability.
