Medicine Hat athletes competing in hometown for Special Olympics Canada Summer Games

Reetz says competing at home has made the Games particularly meaningful for the local athletes.

“They’ve put a lot of work into competing at the national Games as the home team — Team Alberta — and being from Medicine Hat,” Reetz said in a statement.

“For the time to finally be here, to be able to compete at home and have friends and family come see — it’s a pretty big experience for them.”

The bocce competition begins Tuesday with divisioning, which determines the athletes’ competition paths.

Medal matches are scheduled for Friday and Saturday to close out the Games.

The Medicine Hat athletes also have another reason to celebrate during the competition, with Baumgardt and Truant both marking birthdays this week.

Medicine Hat’s Mitchell MacDonald is also competing in tenpin bowling.

The Special Olympics Canada Summer Games feature athletes from across the country competing in ten sports at venues throughout Medicine Hat.

The Games continue until Aug. 15.
