Richmound Rockets fall one game short of Sask-Alta Baseball League title

The Richmound Rockets held the fourth and final qualifying spot heading into the Sask-Alta Baseball League playoffs in Swift Current, and came close in the team’s quest for its 10th title for the small Saskatchewan village.

Their 5-7 regular-season record was the same as the third-place Gull Lake Greyhounds and fifth-place Climax Cardinals, with the Cardinals missing on the tie-breaker.

The Rockets’ opponent in the opening game of the playoffs was the Swift Current Yard Goats, the 2025 league champs.

The Yard Goats won the league pennant in 2026 with a 9-3 record and were undefeated at home, a perfect 6-0.

They had faced the Rockets three times in the regular season, an 8-0 win on June 7, and then in two road games at Medicine Hat’s Athletic Park on July 5, a 4-2 win and a 4-1 loss.

On Sunday, the Rockets completed the upset with a 9-3 win. It was their first road win of the year, after losing all six during the regular season.

The Rockets advanced to the finals against the Cabri River Rats, who had a 6-6 record in the regular season, and defeated the Gull Lake Greyhounds 13-3 to move on.

Heading into the contest, the River Rats held a 2-1 edge in the season series with the Rockets, which included 10-5 and 9-8 home wins, and a 9-8 road loss.

In the championship game, the River Rats came away with a 5-2 win over the Rockets.

Cabri has now won six of the last eight Sask-Alta League titles.

The Richmound team was made up of players from around southwest Saskatchewan and the Medicine Hat area.
