Here is What’s On in Medicine Hat this weekend: July 17-19

There are a variety of things to see and do over the weekend in Medicine Hat, including a country music festival nearby.

The weather is expected to be warm throughout, with a Heat Warning in place from Environment Canada on Friday.

Friday is forecast to be a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of showers. There is also a risk of a thunderstorm. Wind gusts up to 40 km/h near noon, with a daytime high of 36 C.

In the evening, it’s set to be partly cloudy with a 60 percent chance of showers and the risk of a thunderstorm. Wind gusts up to 40 km/h before becoming light near midnight, and a low of 19 C.

On Saturday, a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 percent chance of showers late in the afternoon, and the risk of a thunderstorm.

Wind gusts up to 40 km/h near noon, and a daytime high of 33 C. The evening is set to be clear with a low of 16 C.

On Sunday, it is forecast to be sunny with a high of 31 C. Clear in the evening with a low of 16.

🚒 BBQ in support of the Medicine Hat Firefighters Charitable Foundation

FRIDAY

Big M Ford Lincoln at 1312 Trans Canada Way SE is hosting a charity BBQ in support of the Medicine Hat Firefighters Charitable Foundation on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Those who attend will get to meet the firefighters and check out the fire truck. There will also be several other activities, including a Junior Fire Fit challenge,  a dunk tank with firefighters taking the plunge, and family-friendly games and activities.

For $5, you will get a burger and a pop.

South Country Co-op is partnering with the dealership to put on the event.

🚎 Sunshine Trolley: Guided City Tour

FRIDAY, SATURDAY and SUNDAY

The Sunshine Trolley: Guided City Tour, fuelled by South Country Co-op, is running multiple times this weekend in Medicine Hat.

The tours offer an in-depth guided experience led by local Medicine Hat residents, highlighting the history of neighbourhoods, streets, and some of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

Stops along the route will give passengers the chance to hop off and briefly explore key areas before continuing the tour.

Pick-up is at the Visitor Information Centre at 330 Gehring Rd. SW

Children 12 and under ride free thanks to sponsorship from the Medicine Hat Mavericks.

Tickets are required and available online at the Tourism Medicine Hat website.

🎨 Downtown Art Tour

FRIDAY

A local guide will bring you to four art-focused spots in Downtown Medicine Hat.

You will start with a Gallery Tour hosted by Art Room on 2nd, featuring both southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan, painting, pottery, and copper design. It begins Friday at 2 p.m.

Next is the Creative Freedom Art Hub, where the group will choose their own ceramic plant spout to paint and take home once it’s glazed and fired.

The Fortress of Cheese is also featured, where the group will meet the owner, browse the designer’s creative space, and bring home a memento.

The Yard Patio and Eatery is the final stop, where the owner will talk about the giant, locally painted mural on the brick wall.

The tour is about two hours long and starts at 621 Second St. SE.

🎸 Quonset Days

FRIDAY and SATURDAY

Quonset Days returns to the Biemans farm this weekend, bringing together country music fans, local performers and some of the biggest names in the industry for two nights of live entertainment in support of the ALS Society of Alberta.

The annual festival kicks off Friday with Grande Prairie-born singer-songwriter Tenille Townes leading the lineup, followed by performances from Aaron GoodvinAlli Walker and Lethbridge-based cover band Chevelle 454.

Saturday’s retro-themed lineup features Kentucky country duo Montgomery Gentry with Eddie Montgomery, followed by Phil Vassar. Opening up will be Phoenix, and Fox & The Hounds.

Free shuttles will take people out to the location near Seven Persons.

On Friday, pick-up begins at 4 p.m. at Montana’s and 4:15 p.m. at Panorama Lanes, and will run every 45 minutes until 8 p.m.

On Saturday, pick-up begins at 3 p.m. at Montana’s and 3:15 p.m. at Panorama Lanes, and will run every 45 minutes until 8 p.m.

Return trips each night are between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.

Gates open at 5 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday.

There is also a memorial breakfast at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

🏁 Medicine Hat Dragstrip Races

FRIDAY, SATURDAY, and SUNDAY

The Medicine Hat Dragstrip will be busy this weekend with races.

Friday night is Street Legals, with the Small tire shootout + Jr.’s, Electronics/non gamblers continuing on Saturday and Sunday.

The gates open for spectators on Friday at 5 p.m., with Tech underway, and Racing at 7 p.m.

You can race the strip for $45, with the gates opening for racers at 4 p.m.

Admission is $15, with Kids 12 and under free.

On Saturday, the gates open for Tech and Spectators at 9 a.m.

Then on Sunday, gates open for Tech and Spectators at 8 a.m., with time trials starting at 9 a.m.

⚾️ Medicine Hat Mavericks

FRIDAY

The Medicine Hat Mavericks host the Saskatoon Berries at Athletic Park on Friday at 6:45 p.m.

It’s the Mavs’ final game before the Western Canadian Baseball League All-Star weekend in Saskatoon.

🚶 Historic First Street Walking Tours

SATURDAY

The Historic First Street Southeast Walking Tour takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Just beyond the Southeast tour route lies a different chapter of Medicine Hat history.

Once outside the city limits, First Street Southwest was originally homestead land.

Follow the story of Medicine Hat to its historic edge along the tree-lined boulevard of First Street.

The tour departs from 78 First St. SW, and tickets are available through tixx.ca.

🌲 Parks Day at Cypress Hill Provincial Park, Elkwater

SATURDAY

Celebrate Parks Day at Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Elkwater, on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

There will be a variety of free drop-in events and activities, including track-casting, face painting, temporary tattoos, colouring contests, and cake.

A variety of other activities will take place throughout the day, including interpretive programs, the Elkwater Community Association event, a craft market and BBQ at the Elkwater Community Hall, with bingo starting at 7:30 p.m.

Fireworks will take place off the shore of Elkwater Lake, with the display anticipated at about 10:15 p.m.

🚗 Southeastern Alberta’s Sunniest Car Show

SATURDAY

Southeastern Alberta’s Sunniest Car Show takes place at Murray Chevrolet Cadillac in Medicine Hat on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Located at 1270 Trans Canada Way SE, the event will include new and classic vehicles and everyone’s welcome.

Admission is free, and it includes a customer appreciation BBQ and prize draws.

The SPCA will also be on site with some games.

☘️ Medicine Hat Celtic Festival

SATURDAY

The first-ever Medicine Hat Celtic Festival, in partnership with the Medicine Hat Burns Club, takes place on Saturday with an afternoon and an evening program at the Robertson Memorial Legion.

Located at 720 Second St. SE, the building will use funds raised to purchase a new HVAC system.

The Legion Robertson Memorial Branch No.17 celebrates 100 years.

An afternoon program runs from noon to 7 p.m. It includes a beer garden, entertainment, burgers, hot dogs, haggis on a bap, maritime beer and cuisine. Tickets are $15 per person or $10 for first responders, serving military and veterans.

The evening program includes runs from 6 p.m. to midnight. It includes a full maritime buffet with steaks, entertainment, a silent auction and more.

Tickets are $55 per person or $50 for first responders, serving military and veterans.

The Medicine Hat Speedway will be busy this weekend with racing during the Border Challenge Invitational.

The gates open at 5 p.m., and the races begin at 6 p.m.

👣 Medicine Hat Interpretive Program – These Tracks Lead To Plaster

SUNDAY

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is giving visitors a chance to explore the outdoors and learn more about wildlife this weekend.

The event takes place on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., where participants will learn how to identify animal tracks, discover what prints can reveal about wildlife and create their own plaster cast of a track.

Registration is required, with spots limited.

A $5 donation fee covers all materials.

Participants are asked to bring outdoor clothing, walking shoes and water. The group will meet at the Nature Centre before heading into the park.

Donations will be matched by up to 50 per cent through Rogers Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink.

🚶 Walking History of the Saratoga Trail

A local tour is offering visitors a chance to learn about the history of Saratoga Park and the Métis community that once called the area home.

Pat Aaker and her daughter April will lead the experience, sharing stories about their family, neighbours and life in the community, which remained active until the early 2010s.

Participants will travel to and from Saratoga Park aboard the Sunshine Trolley before exploring the historic site.

The tour includes uneven and unpaved terrain, so organizers recommend participants wear sturdy walking shoes and be comfortable with moderate mobility.

The tour departs from the Visitor Information Centre at 330 Gehring Road SW and is weather-dependent.

It starts at 1 p.m., and tickets are available through Tourism Medicine Hat.
