The Medicine Hat Mavericks split a pair of games at Athletic Park on Tuesday.

They suffered a 10-0 loss in the afternoon contest against the Sylvan Lake Gulls, a makeup contest from June 28.

In the evening game against the Weyburn Beavers, the Mavs won 7-5.

On Wednesday, they will head to Okotoks to play the Dawgs.

During the game against Sylvan Lake, the Gulls used the long ball to take the win.

Things remained scoreless until the third inning, when the Gulls’ Dominic Giusti hit a two-run homer off of Mavs starter Danny Retzlaff.

The Gulls would continue to get to Retzlaff in the fourth inning, with a two-out grand slam by Charlie Collins and a solo homer by Elijah Hammil ending the night for the Mavs starter.

Takeo Cervantez took the mound for the Mavs, and the Gulls hit their third consecutive home run, coming off the bat of Johnboy Rittenhouse.

With the Gulls up 8-0 through four innings, they would get two more runs in the seventh off a two-run home run from Elias Duncan.

The eight-inning contest had three Gulls pitchers combine for the shutout. The starter, Bryson Leach, gave up four hits in the first six innings for the win.

Retzlaff was given the loss for the Mavs, who also used three pitchers in the game.

The Mavericks got their offence going in the evening contest against the Weyburn Beavers.

An early 1-0 lead by the Beavers off a Brayden Mayencourt solo home run in the first was short-lived.

The Mavs would score three in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Evan Morrison started the inning off with a single, and a few batters later, Frankie Giacalone drove him in with a single. Nick Hill would bring Giacalone home with a two-run homer.

The Beavers wouldn’t match the Mavs’ offence with three runs of their own in the top of the second inning. They got a two-run home run from Austin Boylan, and later Hugh Montgomery scored on a Ryan Dauphinee single.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Mavs would tie things back up at four. Morrison would lead off the inning with a single and would later score on a single from Hill.

The tie would remain until the top of the sixth inning, when the Beavers would get a runner home on a sacrifice fly to take a 5-4 lead.

Hill would tie the game up with a home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for the Mavs.

Singles from Johnny Vulcano, Jamel Chabot, and then Eric Calder would bring in another run as Vulcano would score. A double from Morrison would then score Chabot to give the Mavs a 7-5 lead.

The final three innings would remain scoreless, as the Mavs would defeat the Beavers for the fourth straight time.

Jax Graham got the win for the Mavs after taking over at the start of the sixth inning to pitch a pair of innings. The starter, Cody Myers, had thrown five innings. Tanner Hail threw two scoreless innings to finish things off.

Maddox Day would take the loss for the Beavers. He was replaced in the sixth inning by Bill Hosegood, with Keaton Husband also taking to the mound for the Beavers on Tuesday.

The Mavs are now in the middle of six games in five days. After the Wednesday contest in Okotoks, they return to Athletic Park for games Thursday and Friday against the Saskatoon Berries.

On Sunday, July 19, the Western Canadian Baseball League’s All-Star Game takes place in Saskatoon.

Five Mavs players have been named to the East All-Star team for the game.

They include catcher Nate King, third baseman Carter Roth, outfielder Blake Dale, and pitchers Derek Archer and Tanner Hail.

Medicine Hat remains in third place in the East Division standings with 17 wins and 21 losses, 9.5 games behind both Saskatoon and Moose Jaw, and three games up on both Regina and Weyburn.
