City of Medicine Hat lifts restriction on trails near river; boat launches remain closed for another week

The City of Medicine Hat has begun a phased removal of the precautions put in place on June 30 for the high river flow rate.

The South Saskatchewan River at Medicine Hat peaked at 6.04 metres with a flow rate of 1,810 cubic metres per second late last week.

The City said they have determined that the river has returned to a safe level, and all sections of affected low-lying trails along the river are now open.

Parks and Recreation staff have worked to remove any sediment and debris that had built up during peak river flows.

Boat launches at Strathcona Island Park, Echo Dale Regional Park, and Fire Station No. 1 remain closed until they reopen on Friday, July 17.

The City said these locations require additional assessment and cleanup efforts, ensuring they can be safely used to load and unload watercraft.

Residents are reminded to continue to proceed with caution along the river, as banks may remain soft and conditions can change.

The City of Medicine Hat thanked residents for their understanding and cooperation throughout the precautionary measures.
