Two pets died, and a neighbour suffered minor burns after a residential fire in Medicine Hat on Monday afternoon.

Earlier reports had said that there were no injuries.

Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services responded to the 2500 block of Southview Drive Southeast at about 1:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a fire.

Acting Platoon Chief Jason Van Dam says the fire started in the deck area and spread to the home, while also damaging a nearby fifth-wheel trailer.

“There was what we call an exposure fire on the neighbour’s fifth-wheel trailer,” Van Dam said.

“Two pets were located inside the residence, but didn’t make it. They perished,” he added.

“The neighbour sustained some minor facial burns, but was assessed by EMS on scene and not transported.”

Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames at the back of the building, with the fire having spread into the structure.

Fire crews from all three stations responded, with 14 firefighters arriving on scene and quickly bringing the fire under control.

Two engine crews, a ladder truck and a rescue unit responded, along with police, EMS, city gas and electric crews, and the fire investigation unit.

The first units arrived four minutes after being dispatched at 1:28 p.m.

They remained on site for about two hours until the last fire suppression unit left.

An investigation continued until shortly after 5 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and a damage estimate has not yet been released.
