SKATE RAMPS PROJECT PAUSED

City of Medicine Hat pauses portable skate ramp pilot project following resident concerns

Jun 19, 2026 | 10:27 AM

The City of Medicine Hat has temporarily paused its portable skate ramp pilot project and removed the ramps from East Glen Rink after residents raised concerns about excessive noise levels.

City officials said the ramps were scheduled to be removed by the end of the day on Friday, allowing staff to assess potential modifications to reduce the sound generated during use.

The pilot project was launched to explore ways of increasing year-round recreational use of outdoor rinks and other city-owned spaces through portable skate infrastructure.

Officials said feedback from residents and members of the skateboarding community played a key role in the decision to suspend the project.

“We appreciate the valuable resident and skate community feedback that has been received since these ramps have launched — this is what pilot projects are for,” project manager Jeremy Patton said in a statement.

Patton said portable amenities can expand access to recreation opportunities and make better use of existing facilities, but must also be compatible with surrounding neighbourhoods.

The pause means the ramps will not be relocated to Heald Rink as originally planned until staff determine whether the infrastructure can be a suitable fit in parks adjacent to residential areas.

The city said it remains committed to finding solutions to address the noise concerns and identifying appropriate locations for the ramps.

Further updates will be provided once future locations have been determined.
