Newell Pro Rodeo returns to Brooks this weekend

Jun 3, 2026 | 10:44 AM

Some of the top rodeo competitors will converge on Brooks this weekend as the Newell Pro Rodeo returns for two nights of competition.

The June 5-6 event is approved by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

The outdoor rodeo starts Friday and Saturday evenings at 6:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Silver Sage Corral.

It’s part of the Maple Leaf Circuit, which includes over 35 rodeos and concludes each year with a four-day Finals in Regina at the Canadian Western Agribition.

Events include bareback riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, team roping, tie-down roping, breakaway roping and bull riding.

Competitors from as far away as Australia will be at the event, with the majority from Canada and the United States.

Several competitors from around the Medicine Hat area will compete.

Barrel Racing will feature Brooks’ own Lynette Brodoway competing on Friday. She won the Ladies Barrel Racing at the 2023 Canadian Finals Rodeo. Saturday has Purple Springs’ Taylor-Jane Gardner and Bassano’s Laurie Morasch in the event.

The Bull Riding event will have a dozen riders each night, with Medicine Hat’s Lonnie Phillips and Foremost’s William Barrows, the 2024 Canadian Finals Rodeo champion, both riding on Friday. A notable rider on that night to watch from Mexico is Edgar Durazo, a two-time Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) Champion.

Riding Saturday is Grady Young from Leader, Sask., who earned the fourth most money among bullriders in the CPRA in 2025. Also competing is the second-highest earner, Jacob Gardner.

Saddlebronc has a strong field of riders, with Maple Creek’s James Perrin riding on Saturday.

Elkwater’s Wyatt Maines is in the Bareback competition on Saturday.

Tie-down Roping has Consul’s Braden Brost and Cypress County’s Tyler Popescul competing Friday, and Medicine Hat’s Clark and Quade Hughson are both roping on Saturday.

Brost is back at it with Team Roping on Friday, as is Bow Island’s Taylor Wudrich. On Saturday, the event includes Caleb Mohl of Brooks.

Steer Wrestling on Friday has Maple Creek’s Tate Beierbach.

Beyond the evening rodeo performances, the weekend includes a full slate of family activities.

The annual parade is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday through the community of Brooks.

A youth timed-event rodeo begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, featuring barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping and team roping.

Children’s activities, including sack races, tug-of-war and other games, will follow with the Little Britches Rodeo.

Live music will cap off both nights at 9 p.m., with Rent to Own and The Paragoners performing Friday and Paragoners and Garrett Gregory on Saturday. There are also live DJs each night.

Committee contact Carlotta Weerstra said the Newell Pro Rodeo remains one of the community’s premier annual events.

“This would be our biggest rodeo that we put on,” Weerstra said.

“It’s a big draw for the community.”

Advance tickets remain available online through the Silver Sage Corral website and by contacting the rodeo office.

Pre-sale rodeo tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for ages 11-18, and free for 10 and under, they are available online or by contacting Silver Sage Corral office at 403-363-6108.

Organizers say ticket prices will increase by $10 to $15 at the gate.
