City of Medicine Hat’s Southwest Substation to begin construction in June

May 27, 2026 | 10:58 AM

Construction on Medicine Hat’s Southwest Substation project will begin in June 2026.

The City of Medicine Hat received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission for the construction and operation of the facility on April 25, 2025.

The substation, known as MHS-11, is located west of Gershaw Drive and Highway 3, just north of Saamis Prairie View Cemetery.

In early June, the City says you will see increased on-site activity, with crews bringing in machinery and starting the groundwork to prepare for construction.

The City says the project is part of its long-term planning to support growth and maintain reliable electric service for customers across the community.

“As Medicine Hat continues to grow, this new substation will help ensure we can meet increasing electricity demand in the south end while supporting reliable service for customers,” Managing Director of Energy, Land and Environment Rochelle Pancoast said in a statement.

The City say at the time of approval that the site has no agricultural impact and its proximity to Highway 3 results in low social and visual impact.

The project has been in development since 2019.

Following a previous application process that was denied, the City submitted a revised application in December 2024.

MHS-11 is expected to be in service in spring 2027.
