$2M has been awarded to Medicine Hat College to develop the Centre for Community Wellness

Medicine Hat College has received $2-million from the Government of Alberta to help plan and design the proposed Centre for Community Wellness, bringing the project to a position ready for construction.

The goal of the centre is to expand the capacity and training in high-demand health and community service programs at the college, including Social Work, Practical Nursing, Health Care Aide, and Addictions Counselling.

Campus wellness supports, such as counselling, medical services, Indigenous student supports, and childcare, will also be included in this space, making them more readily accessible to students and community members.

Wellness services on campus are currently delivered from trailers, isolated rooms, or off-site locations, with the centre creating a seamless, student-centred wellness hub and expanding experiential learning and simulation spaces aligned with Alberta’s workforce priorities.

The president and CEO of Medicine Hat College, Kevin Shufflebotham, said the centre would be a major step forward for the region, to meet the wellness needs of students and the broader community, while helping train the next generation of health and social service professionals.

Shufflebotham said the project aligns with provincial priorities around mental health, rural development and workforce training, and said the college looks forward to continuing discussions with the Government of Alberta and community partners as the investment moves ahead.
