Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s basketball team signs Markusson continuing family legacy

Jan 11, 2026 | 5:00 AM

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s basketball team have signed Hannah Markusson of Medicine Hat for the 2026–27 season, continuing a family connection to the Rattlers that spans three generations.

Markusson’s grandfather, Armand Cheret, previously served as head coach of the Rattlers women’s soccer team, taking them to an ACAC silver medal during his 13-year-long career as a coach.

One of the players on that roster was his daughter, Claudette Markusson, who was also a standout athlete and an Education graduate.

Claudette is Markusson’s late mother, who passed away in 2020 and is remembered for her competitive drive and strong support of her children’s athletic pursuits.

The family’s ties to Medicine Hat College also include Hannah’s father, Jeff Markusson, who worked as an instructor and previously managed the Be Fit for Life Centre.

Markusson said she can’t wait to play for the Rattlers next season.

“I’m actually very excited, I’ve gotten to have opportunities to play with them and practice with them, it’s just a great feeling going in,” Markusson said.

Markusson said it’s a great feeling to follow her family’s footsteps with the Rattlers.

“I’ve heard the impacts they’ve [her family] had on the sports and athletics there, so it’s a great feeling to get to do that myself as well,” Markusson said.

“I feel like I always kind of knew I was gonna end up playing there.”

Rattlers head coach Chad Watson has previously coached Markusson and has come to know the family well.

“I coached her a couple of years ago in club basketball. I’ll never forget the first game of the tournament,” Watson said.

Watson said Markusson has always played up a level in competitions.

“She’s one of the best teammates I think I’ve ever seen, she’s constantly cheering people on, she’s constantly giving feedback,” Watson said.

“She’s a leader, and that’s one thing I commented about,” he added.

“I just love the intensity that she brings every single day.”

Watson said having talented local players like Markusson, who are from the Medicine Hat and surrounding area, is super important.

“She’s played on the senior team at Medicine Hat High School, so she’s no stranger,” Watson said.

“She gets to finish up her Grade 12 year this year, and right now [Markusson is] Medicine Hat High School’s ranked number three in the province for 4a,” he added.

“She’s gonna really help the Rattlers become better, for the following season.”
