The Medicine Hat women’s Rattlers basketball team are tied atop the standings despite injury challenges

The Medicine Hat Rattlers women’s basketball team are tied for second place going into the Christmas break, despite battling injuries.

After a 6-1 preseason, the team opened the regular season with four straight wins before dropping four of their next five games.

The team sits at 5-4 and is tied for second place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, South Division, heading into the second half of the season.

The team’s biggest challenge in the first half of the season has been staying healthy, with the roster missing a three-year starter all season due to ACL surgery and a returning standout sidelined by a stress fracture.

As well as a post player who ranks among the league’s top rebounders recently fractured her wrist and has missed practice time, though she has progressed from a cast to a brace.

Although the team is in a good position in the standings, the head coach of the team, Chad Watson, said the team needs to step up.

“I’ve got to get my veteran crew playing better in order for us to have any success in the playoffs or to even make the playoffs,” Watson said.

“Our first and second-year players, though, have really stepped up,” he added.

“They’ve done a great job contributing, especially in the absence of some of our players who’ve been hurt.”

The team will break for the holidays before returning to practice on Dec. 29, 2025, with the focus shifting to intensity, execution and leadership as the playoff race tightens.

With 12 conference games remaining against South Division opponents, including Lethbridge, St. Mary’s, Briarcrest, Red Deer and Olds, the team has put itself in a position to compete for a playoff berth.

Despite sitting atop the standings, the margin for error remains slim in a competitive league, and the path forward will depend on getting healthy and peaking at the right time.
