Women’s Rattlers volleyball team heads into Christmas break after an unfortunate injury-filled season

The women’s Rattlers volleyball team enters the second half of their season after the Christmas break, healthy and optimistic after their first half was shaped by early success.

Unfortunately for the Rattlers, the early success had been disrupted by injuries, which sidelined several key players, affecting consistency through the remainder of the first half.

The head coach of the volleyball team, Kim Jensen, said the injuries threw the team into a loop.

“Some of our main players got injured. We had some concussions, ankle injuries, stuff like that,” Jensen said.

“[We] probably would have liked to get a few more wins out of the first half.”

The Rattlers opened the season against Ambrose, highlighted by a five-set reverse-sweep win at home.

Trailing two sets to none, the team won the last three straight sets, a performance that demonstrated the group’s competitiveness and hard work.

With all players now healthy, the focus shifts to the second half of the season.

The Rattlers resume play Jan. 9 and 10 following the Christmas break and will also compete in a pre-season tournament in Olds.

Jensen said the tournament will provide an opportunity to face new opponents and test adjustments ahead of league play.

“We get to try some new things that we’ve been working on in practice. I’m really excited to see them do those things,” Jensen said.

“They’re hungry in practice, they know they can compete better, and they know that we’re healthy now,” she added.

“I’m really excited to see them in January.”

Jensen said team chemistry has always been a strength despite the setbacks.

“Our team chemistry is awesome. I couldn’t ask for a better group of student athletes,” Jensen said.

With no roster changes this season, the group has grown closer through shared challenges, using the experience to strengthen cohesion and accountability.

Preparation and consistency remain priorities moving forward, with the team concentrating on refining its strengths and executing more effectively in competition.

Jensen and the rest of the coaching staff enter the new year with hopes for the group’s ability.

“I do feel confident, I don’t think we go into any weekends not confident,” Jensen said.

“This group is going to turn it around. I have confidence in them 100 percent.”

As the season continues, the Rattlers aim to build on their early triumphs.
