WINTER REMINDERS

Keeping sidewalk safe in Medicine Hat during winter weather

Nov 24, 2025 | 3:00 PM

When the snowfall hits, as it did on Monday, there are a few reminders for people to help keep the sidewalks safe for pedestrians.

Residents in Medicine Hat are required to clear their sidewalks within 24 hours after the time of the last snowfall.

If this is not done, they could face a $100 fine under the city’s public roads bylaw.

The Medicine Hat Police Services Municipal Bylaw Supervisor, Brad Potts, said that it’s important to remember that snow from the public sidewalk can be put on the roadway, but not from your driveway or any other part of your property.

“Extension cords, we all realize that they’re important to keep your car starting in the cold winter months, but cords cannot be on the sidewalk,” Potts said.

“They must be at least eight feet above the sidewalk. Making sure they’re not a hazard.”

Individuals could also face a $100 fine for this offense.

The city has several residents who are creating and selling devices on social media to allow people to plug in vehicles within the rules.

To help prevent trips and falls residents are encouraged to use sand or other granular material on the sidewalks to reduce the risk of slips and falls.

Free sidewalk sand is provided by the city and available to pick up from five locations:

  • Fourth Avenue Northeast, behind the Shamrock Bottle Depot
  • Big Marble Go Centre at the north parking lot
  • Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede grounds, west of the Kinplex Arenas
  • Southlands Drive Southeast near Chartwell Place Southeast
  • Municipal Works Building at 188 Kipling St. SE, front parking lot

You are required to bring your own container and shovel to collect the sand, and you can take up to five gallons at a time.

If the bin is empty, you can call 403-529-8177 to report it.
