The Veterans’ Crosswalk in Medicine Hat will recognize the heroic actions of the city’s vets for years to come

The City of Medicine Hat hosted an event outside City Hall on Saturday to commemorate the recent installation of a Veterans’ Crosswalk in downtown Medicine Hat.

The crosswalk adds history in Medicine Hat, symbolizing honour and respect for those who live in the city who fought and gave their lives for our country.

The crosswalk is located between City Hall and Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park, on the north side of the intersection of Sixth Avenue Southeast and First Street Southeast.

Edward Devine, who has served 40 years in the military, said there are lots of vets in the city deserving of a bigger spotlight.

“We still have hundreds of vets alive in Medicine Hat, some with mental and physical disabilities,” Devine said.

“So I wanted to create something that highlights the vets, and what better way to do it than a sidewalk.”

Devine said the crosswalk looks absolutely stunning and is very grateful the city agreed to do it.

“It will be good for tourism, and it will certainly highlight veterans within Medicine Hat,” Devine said.

“This is going to be here now for generations to come, and I’m sure we veterans are very proud of it. And we hope the city likes it as well.”

The sidewalk will become a great factor in recognizing vets in the city; however, Devine said there is still more he would like to see happen for the vets in Medicine Hat.

“I’ve got some other proposals in my head, which I’ll be bringing to council next year to do with Memorial Park, to make it a safer place and a cleaner place,” Devine said.

Devine said the Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park should be treated with respect, like a graveyard.

“I spend a lot of time in the park, cleaning the park, picking up needles, rubbish, and painting Duffy the Tank when it gets graffitied,” Devine said.

“It’s a place where people should be able to go in peace to enjoy everything in there.”

“So veterans can go there and sit, relax and reflect,” he added.
