Newly elected Redcliff mayor Czember says the win is satisfying

The newly elected Redcliff mayor Chris Czember said it was very satisfying to win the election.

“Much more satisfying than just getting acclaimed in, that’s for sure,” Czember said on Friday.

“It certainly says that the people approve of my time that I’ve spent on council for the last eight years, that they approve of what I’ve done,” he added.

“Moving forward, it’s certainly more of a time commitment. I’m already starting to experience that, already met with our CAO yesterday, and I had some phone calls with her.”

He adds that he is starting to settle into the role.

“One of the big duties of mayor is assigning everybody to their boards and commissions, and I was working on that for a few hours last night,” Czember said.

“A few extra duties, but nothing that’s a shocker yet.”

In a community like Redcliff, the role of mayor is still more of a part-time role, unlike in Medicine Hat, where it is full-time.

“The love of the community is the motivation for the job,” Czember said.

He was also able to offer insight into the close vote for the final position on the council in Redcliff.

“They just finished the recount yesterday. I think about four o’clock or so. They started at one o’clock. The recount came back exactly the same for the sixth, seventh, and eighth spots, I’m told.”

“So no changes whatsoever.”

Former mayor Dwight Kilpatrick won the sixth and final position on council by a single vote over incumbent councillor James Allen.

Redcliff council will also include Bernie Bakker, Brandie Burns, and Eric Solberg, joining incumbents Matthew St. Pierre and Larry Leipert.

Czember said they have a solid group with a good combination of new and experienced councillors.
