Election Day in Alberta, what to know

Albertans are set to pick their next mayors and councillors Monday as municipal elections take place across the province.

Final results will be delayed potentially for days as paper ballots are being used this election.

Voting runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Identification must be brought to the polling station.

School board trustees will also be voted on at each location.

City of Medicine Hat

There are six candidates running for mayor in Medicine Hat, with a record 39 candidates seeking one of the eight spots on the city council.

The race for the mayoral votes are Linnsie Clark with 110, Drew Barnes with 82 votes, Kris Samraj with 70 votes, Andy McGrogan with 23 votes, Alan Rose with 14 votes, and Mark Fisher with 4 votes.

Ten voting stations are set up throughout the city.

7. Kinplex Arena (2055 21 Ave. SE)

8. Victory Lutheran Church (2793 Southview Dr. SE)

9. Holy Family Catholic Church (1451 Strachan Rd. SE)

10. Medicine Hat Lodge (1051 Ross Glen Dr. SE)

Election results will be posted on the city website as they become available.

The City has let voters know they can expect a few changes when at the polls on Monday.

Online voter registration is available and encouraged to speed up the process when voting in Medicine Hat.

Free transit will also be available on election day.

The Medicine Hat Public School Division has 13 candidates running for the five positions on its board of trustees.

Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education has 10 candidates running, with five trustee positions available.

Cypress County

Cypress County has five of its nine wards contested this election.

The unofficial results are in for Cypress County council candidates.

Blaine Brost representing Ward 2 won with 146 votes to Michael Teliske’s 46, Robin Kurpjuweit representing Ward 4 won with 102 votes to Bill Thompson’s 71, Dan Hamilton representing Ward 5 won with 178 votes to Della Burkitt’s 110, Garry Procter representing Ward 7 won with 181 votes to Ana McFadyen’s 124, and Shane Hok representing Ward 8 won with 55 votes to Les Woodrow’s 39.

Voting will take place at several different locations throughout the county depending on the ward you are in.

  • Ward 2 (Irvine/Walsh) voting is at the Irvine Sports Complex and Walsh Community Centre.
  • Ward 4 (Longfellow) and Ward 5 (Dunmore/Veinerville) will have voting at the Cypress County Office at 816 2nd Ave. in Dunmore.
  • Ward 7 (Seven Persons North/Desert Blume) has voting at the Desert Blume Golf Club Clubhouse.
  • Ward 8 (Redcliff/Highway 523 North) will have voting at the Desert Blume Golf Club Clubhouse and Redcliff Seniors Citizens Centre at 26 Main St. in Redcliff.

Voting will take place for trustee candidates in Ward 3 for Prairie Rose Public Schools, which covers Dunmore and Redcliff areas. Three candidates are looking to secure one of two positions.

Town of Redcliff

The Town of Redcliff has two candidates in the race for mayor, with 10 others looking to secure one of six positions on council.

The advance voting for the mayoral candidates puts Chris Czember ahead of Donald Leslie McRobb.

Czember had 190 votes compared to McRobbs 93 votes.

The advance votes for the council candidates include:

Bernie Bakker with 183 votes, Matthew St. Pierre with 150 votes, Brady Burns with 141 votes, Larry Leipert with 122, Eric Solberg with 119 votes, Shawna Gale with 119 votes, Dwight Kilpatrick with 118 votes, Cathrine A. Crozier with 111 votes, James Allen with 104 votes, and Korey Lindberg with 100.

Voting will take place at the Redcliff Seniors Citizens Centre at 26 Main St.

Official results are set to be announced at noon on Friday, Oct. 24.

County of Forty Mile

The County of Forty Mile has council acclaimed in all seven divisions.

  • Ward 1 – Gary Cochrane
  • Ward 2 – Diane Harty
  • Ward 3 – Stacey Barrows
  • Ward 4 – Pearl Jones
  • Ward 5 – Tammy Reimer
  • Ward 6 – Don Drake
  • Ward 7 – James Babe

The county’s website currently offers no details on voting for school board trustees, although there are trustee candidates for Prairie Rose Public Schools in the area that have been acclaimed.

Town of Bow Island

Gordon Reynolds has been acclaimed to return as the Mayor of Bow Island, with eight candidates running for six council positions.

The race for the council candidates are Bill Ressler with 215 votes, Robin Knibbs with 209 votes, Denise Curliss with 178 votes, Dave Harrison with 767 votes, Lowell Leffler with 134 votes, Randi Belcourt with 112 votes, Shannon Strom with 105 votes, Brad Parkinson with 93 votes.

Voting takes place at the Bow Island Legion at 202 Fifth Ave. E.

The Town of Bow Island website has an election section set up, with results expected to be posted on Tuesday.

City of Brooks

The City of Brooks has two candidates running for mayor, and 12 candidates looking to secure votes for one of the six councillor positions with the city.

Norm Gerestein has been declared the unofficial winner of the 2025 Municipal Election for Mayor of Brooks with 1804 votes.

Joel Goodnough has finihed the race with 1092 votes.

The Council candidates race include:

Mara Nesbitt with 1366 votes, Chad Falkenberg with 1092 votes, Jackie Johnson with 1040 votes, Anne-Marie Philipsen with 1018 votes, Mike Regner with 942 votes, Mohammed Idriss with 928 votes, Clayton Heck with 927 votes, Emelcris Aurelio with 873 votes, Ryan ‘Skippy’ Mobbs with 819 votes, Paul Post with 785 votes, Marissa Wardrop wih 689 votes, and Carly Bryant with 565 votes.

Voting takes place at the JBS Canada Centre Fieldhouse at 323 First St. E.

County of Newell

The County of Newell has candidates acclaimed in seven of its nine divisions.

Voting will take place for Division 4 including Cassils, Bow City, Rainier, and Scandia as well as Division 8 for Duchess.

Division 4 will take place in two locations.

The votes for the council candidates in Division 4 are lead by Holly Johnson with 117 votes and Ben Commodore with 50 votes.

Division 8 is lead by Benjamin Hofer with 62 votes.

Followed by Shawn Dahl with 29 votes and Terry Neigum with 20 votes.

Voting for those living north of Township Road 170 will be at the Cassils Community Centre at 190073 Range Road 155, Cassils.

Voters living south of Township Road 170 will vote at the Rainier Community Centre at 160077 Highway 873, Rainier.

Division 8 voting will be at the Duchess Recreation Centre at 256 Louise Ave. W., Duchess.
