Medicine Hat council candidate Hale calls for improved collaboration at City Hall

Oct 9, 2025 | 2:34 PM

City council candidate Brock Hale says building a better working relationship at City Hall is his top priority if elected in the fall municipal election.

The 36-year-old school teacher, who was born and raised in Medicine Hat, is one of several new faces running for a council seat.

He says recent dysfunction and distrust between councillors, administration, and residents has held the city back.

“Number one is to fix some of the drama, the tension, the relationship going on at City Hall,” Hale said.

“To ensure we can get that positive relationship and positive trust and community kind of back.”

His second priority is focused on encouraging housing and business growth, which he sees as closely connected.

“If we have housing, then businesses can come. If there’s businesses, more people will want to come,” Hale said.

Third, Hale said he wants to look closely at the city’s finances to help avoid property tax increases.

“I think there are ways that we can save money,” Hale said.

“[We need to] work from the financial side of things at the city level.”

Hale has taught French immersion at St. Mary’s School for the past 12 years.

He played basketball for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers before spending time in Romania, where he met his wife.

He later completed his education degree in Edmonton before returning to teach in Medicine Hat, and is now a father of two kids.

He said his interest in politics developed over time through teaching social studies and dealing with local municipal issues in his own neighbourhead.

“[Over the] past of couple years I’ve been dealing with some municipal issues and concerns with our family in our neighbourhood,” Hale said.

“That kind of got me started down the path of looking more into how things are run at the city, and ultimately, being frustrated with a lot of things.”

Hale said his decision to run stems from a desire to help improve things.

“I don’t think any of [council], on their own, are bad people,” Hale said.

“I think they all want what’s best for the city. But personalities or drama got in the way,” he added.

“I think it was a sad, awful thing for a city that it came to this.”

Hale has volunteered with Canadians Reaching Out to the World’s Children Foundation, including serving as a board member and president.

The Medicine Hat group has worked on projects in Africa, Romania, and India, as well as in the Medicine Hat area.

Hale also coaches and referees community sports and said he wants to be part of a diverse and effective council.

“I would add a good dynamic to that, a good piece to that,” Hale said.

“I hope to find a variety of experience and age on council.”
