Medicine Hat councilor candidate Albrecht focuses on maintaining the city, if elected

Mark Albrecht is running for council in Medicine Hat and is prioritizing servicing and maintaining the city.

Albrecht said there needs to be growth in what the city already has before focusing on expanding.

“Our city has some of the best facilities for cities this size, and even quite larger. I’m talking the bike trail system, the leisure centre, outdoor swimming and rec facilities, Medicine Hat is up there,” Albrecht said.

Other priorities Albrecht will be focusing on in the election is trying to build a stronger communication between management and council.

“Before we can get anything done, that has to happen,” Albrecht said.

“Council needs to respect and work with the management. But at the same time, management has to be accountable to the elected officials, because we’re representing the citizens of Medicine Hat.”

Albrecht said respecting the management team is important if the city wants to save money.

Property tax in Medicine Hat is another point Albrecht will be focusing on.

“I’d like to see a freeze on property taxes. I bragged about the Medicine Hat advantage for low utilities and low property taxes,” Albrecht said.

“And I just recently looked up here, we’re ranked 15th highest now in Alberta for property taxes, according to 2022 statistics, where we used to be one of the lowest.”

Albrecht was born and raised in Medicine Hat, then attended college at the University of Montana for his Bachelor of Arts degree.

Since graduating from university, Albrecht started a consulting company 29 years ago in southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan but has now been out of the business since June, 2025.

Albrecht has little political experience as this is the first time he has run for council but says he brings 29 years of business experience to the election.

“I’d like to see representation from all sides. But the same token, I just feel that business representation has been lacking the last probably 15 years,” said Albrecht.

“I think we need to see a council of some more business orientated people on it.”

Albrecht said it was the proposal to narrow Third Street Riverside that propelled him to run for council.

“It’s in super rough shape. I think most of the people down here would like to sort of see it stay the same. In fact, they wouldn’t mind it being slowed down a bit, maybe by putting in a couple extra pedestrian crossings,” he said.
