Former Brooks Bandits player Orca Wiesblatt has passed away

The Brooks Bandits announced Monday morning that former player Orca Wiesblatt has passed away at the age of 25.

Orca played for the Bandits during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

“The Bandits staff, players, board of directors, volunteers and fans send their condolences to Orca’s family, billets, his friends, former coaches, teammates and everyone who loved him,” said the statement from the team.

He won an AJHL Championship and Western Canada Cup Championship during his time in Brooks.

Orca is the older brother of former Medicine Hat Tigers captain Oasiz Wiesblatt, who is currently at an NHL camp with the Nashville Predators alongside brother Ozzy.

Orca was the second oldest of the four hockey playing brothers, a year younger than Ocean who was a teammate of his during his first stint with the Bandits.

He also played four seasons as a member of the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen.

Orca was two seasons away from his junior hockey career, before he resumed it during the 2023-24 season with the SPHL’s Pensacola Ice Flyers.

He played the 2024-25 season in the FPHL with the Athens Rock Lobsters.

Orca was signed to play with the ECHL’s Allen Americans in Texas for the 2025-26 season.

The league announced Monday morning that an automobile accident over the weekend had led to his passing.

“We are all heartbroken,” said Americans head coach and general manager Steve Martinson in a statement.

“Orca (Weisblatt) was really looking forward to this next step in his hockey career. He wasn’t just skilled, he was a momentum changing hitter. I can still see his grin when he would return to the bench after one of his big hits,” he added.

“That is what we will miss the most, his infectious smile.”
