Medicine Hat Mayor Linnsie Clark to seek re-election

Sep 12, 2025 | 8:42 AM

Medicine Hat Mayor Linnsie Clark has decided to seek re-election.

She announced her intention to run on Sept. 12, through a press release.

Clark had overwhelming support with over 66 per cent of the vote during the 2021 election.

Historically, she became the first woman to hold the position of mayor in the city.

Her term on council has come with some turmoil, however, as conflict at a 2023 council meeting between her and the city manager, lead to sanctions being put on her by council.

The majority of those conditions were later removed after a judicial review was completed.

The press release said Clark has been consistent in her quest to deliver an open and accountable government that values and encourages building regional and local relationships, often in the face of internal resistance.

It also acknowledged that sometimes, doing the right thing comes at a cost.

“Serving as mayor of Medicine Hat has been an honour,” said Mayor Clark.

“Despite challenges, we have made meaningful progress in strengthening our community, supporting local families and businesses, and planning for the future.”

“Our work is not finished. Many of the goals we set out together remain ahead of us, and I am determined to see them through.”

Mayor Clark added that the next four years will focus on continuing to advocate for open, accountable government; strengthening relationships; making decisions in a manner that is clear and evidence-based; and advocating for data-driven opportunities that residents can support.

“My vision is a Medicine Hat that is prosperous, innovative, safe, and welcoming for everyone. With the continued support of our residents, I know that together, we can build on the progress we’ve made and complete the work we started together,” added Clark.

Some of the achievements the release highlighted were:

  • Follow-through on the promise to seek greater openness and accountability at City Hall
  • A commitment to keep utilities local
  • Building better relationships with regional partners
  • Working towards creating strategic guidance for administration to create a competitive environment for local businesses and citizens
  • The city developing a regional economic strategic plan
  • Conducting a review of the city’s energy business
  • Completing an environmental frame work
  • Beginning preliminary work on a south side recreation centre
  • Public disclosure of additional important city financial information on the city’s website
  • Launching participation in Decentralized Energy Canada’s Next Generation Energy Innovation Challenge to leverage provincial and federal investment in demonstration projects, creating jobs and improving the competitiveness of Alberta’s energy businesses
  • A quest to deliver an open and accountable government that values and encourages building regional and local relationships, often in the face of internal resistance.

Mayor Clark is expecting to announce a community event at a future date to interact with the public and share her campaign’s vision for the future of Medicine Hat.

Clark is the fifth candidate to put her name forward for mayor in the Oct. 20, 2025, municipal election.

The nomination deadline is Sept. 22, 2025.
