Medicine Hat to get flood and drought protection funding from Alberta

Jul 11, 2025 | 12:30 PM

The Alberta government is investing $7 million to improve water quality and help protect communities from floods and drought — including around Medicine Hat.

Half of the funding is assigned to 20 new projects to help restore and protect watersheds across the province.

The City of Medicine Hat is receiving $677,000 for a program which will use bioengineering to stabilize riverbanks, while training college students.

The South East Alberta Watershed Alliance will get $149,000 for a project working with landowners and agriculture producers to adopt on-farm and ranchland practices, improving the watershed function.

Rebecca Shultz, minister of environment and protected areas, said in a media statement the money will help community protection from future floods and droughts.

“This funding not only supports landowners, it also results in cleaner water, thriving ecosystems, and a healthier environment for people and wildlife across the province,” Schultz said.

Applications are now open for the second half of the funding to be distributed to more watershed resilience and restoration projects.

Organizations, non-profits, Indigenous communities, and municipalities can apply until Sept. 15.
