Medicine Hat Cubs start South Final with Bisons on Friday

Mar 7, 2025 | 12:12 PM

The Medicine Hat Cubs will look to stop the Carstar Okotoks Bisons from winning their fourth Heritage Junior Hockey League title in a row.

A best of five south division final between the two teams starts Friday in Okotoks.

The Bisons are a team that’s very familiar to the Cubs, having faced them in the south final two of past three playoffs.

Captain Callen Prosofsky, a four year player with the Cubs, played in both of those series, and after suffering defeat previously will be looking to be on the right side of it this time around.

“I definitely feel a little bit different. We beat them a few times in regular season, which is huge,” Prosofsky said.

“I think that this is the strongest group we’ve had in the last four years, as well as I think that it’s the weakest group that Okotoks has had over the last few years,” he added.

“Definitely feeling good about it.”

Assistant Capt. Kyle Woolridge has lead the offensive charge for the Cubs, winning the regular season scoring race, and heading into the south final as the top playoff scorer still playing with 7 points through four games.

Woolridge said his confidence has grown throughout his three years with the team, with some good players to play with.

Knowing a team effort will be needed to get the job done against the Bisons.

“It also starts in the room. You know, everyone just kind of gels together. Everyone’s there supporting each other and pushing each other to be their best, and it’s a good feeling,” Woolridge said.

“We know we can beat them. So we just got to play our game and play defense first. And if you can play great defense, we know the scoring is going to come. We have great offense too,” he added.

“I think it starts from the back end and we just got to be ready to play.”

For Prosofsky in his final stretch with the Cubs he’s going to leave it all on the ice.

“Just every shift, when you go out there, you’re like, okay, I got to give it everything I got. Leave nothing in the gas tank,” Prosofsky said.

The Cubs get a chance to play in front of their home crowd at the Kinplex One arena on Sunday at 3 p.m. for game two of the south final.

Game 3 will be Tuesday in Okotoks.
