City of Medicine Hat to continue installing ‘elephant’s feet’ crossings in 2025

Feb 26, 2025 | 10:13 AM

Medicine Hat said Wednesday it will continue to convert standard trail crossings to “elephant’s feet” crossings during the 2025 construction season.

Elephant’s feet crossings are marked by dashed white lines made up of white square that indicate that cyclists can remain on their bikes while crossing the road, unlike standard crosswalks where they must dismount and walk their bike across.

There’s also additional road signage for drivers.

The city said converting select crossings into elephant’s feet enhances safety and visibility for users of the city’s 190-kilometre-long trail network.

The crossings improve connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians while supporting efficient traffic flow for motorists, the city said in a news release.

There are currently 12 elephant’s feet crossings in Medicine Hat. Most of them are located on Carry Drive Southeast and two are in place along Division Avenue South.

The city will continue adding the larger crosswalks within projects in 2026 and beyond, it said.
