A hockey game is taking place Tuesday evening to help raise money for Mission Mexico.

A pair of student on student council at Monsignor McCoy High School spearheaded the idea to bring back what used to be an annual hockey game with the staff playing against the grads.

Organizer Logan Pancoast knew right away which cause they would support.

“We do Mission Mexico fundraisers at the school, kind of every year, and they help poor communities in Mexico,” Pancoast said.

“They build schools and houses for any of those kind of communities that need help. We thought it’d be a good cause to support.”

Mission Mexico an official outreach of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary has helped those in Mexico for over 25 years.

It has a local connection, as it was started by Father Fred Monk, who has served as a priest in both Medicine Hat and Bow Island.

With the game helping the cause this year, organizer Laine Gauthier believes this hockey game hasn’t taken place since the early 2000’s.

“We’re hoping that now forward, someone picks it up like we did this year and keeps the tradition going,” Gauthier said.

“A good way for alumni to come back to school and teachers get a closer bond,” he added.

“I think it’s really cool that we’re using division staff, not just McCoy, so teachers that you may have had when you were 10, 11 years old, and being able to meet with them and rebuild and reconnect.”

Gauthier said he thinks the grads are super excited.

“I think a lot, like obviously Canada has a big thing with hockey, so allowing the grads to play in that, I think they’re really, really excited,” Gauthier said.

“Same with the teachers. I’ve heard from our sister school, St. Francis Xavier, beside us, that a lot of the students are excited to come and watch their teachers play,” he added.

“Alumni, I hope, will be able to come out and support to keep it going throughout the years.”

A few alumni, mostly siblings of graduates will also be playing on the teachers teams.

The fundraiser game is Tuesday at Kinplex One Arena at 5:30 p.m., admission is $2, with profits going to Mission Mexico.
