‘Treblemakers’ gives learning musicians courage in Medicine Hat

Young or starting musicians can hone their skills in an encouraging and welcoming environment with ‘Treblemakers‘.

Treblemakers meet every third Sunday of the month from 2 until 5 p.m at the Liquid Listening Lounge.

Muriel Erick, show organizer at Liquid Listening Lounge, said that because of their stage, she’s seen people grow.

“We have seen a timid little girl that came in here with her hair hanging down and quietly going to the mic and asking us to all keep talking because she didn’t want us to be quiet while she sang,” she said.

“That girl has come out of her shell. Two years later, we’re seeing this girl that’s really grown and she’s a beautiful vocalist and a fabulous musician,” she added.

“Because of this stage, she’s grown.”

Erick said that, like a teacher holding a recital once a year, this would give musicians the chance to improve in performance once a month.

She said that they’re excited to flex the musician muscles of those who aren’t ready for the pressure of a full show.

Treblemakers is a guided jam for beginner or novice players to feel welcome and mentored.

All skill levels are welcome, there’s no pressure and no judgment, but there is a lot of encouragement.

Erick said that, with the group, they hope to continue to grow the local music industry.

She says that music is a healer, and that she’s seen people come to life because of it.

“I can tell you that I’m a big proponent of getting music lessons for your kids. Stop buying them video games and stuff,” she said.

“Buy them a guitar. Invest in a piano. Get them in the school bands and schools. Please keep music in the schools because it’s such a healer too,” she added.

“Music is a healer. I’ve seen it happen.”
