‘Positive experiences for kids in our community’: Medicine Hat YMCA asks for Camp Jude support

May 17, 2024 | 12:19 PM

The YMCA of Medicine Hat is requesting financial support from the community to help keep open a summer day camp for children who have experienced trauma.

Camp Jude, launched in 2022, supporting children ages five to 12 who as a result of trauma exhibit behaviors that prevent them from participating in traditional day camps.

An anonymous donor had previously funded the program, with their contributions matched by a one-time Y Canada Innovation Grant.

The YMCA has worked to secure additional funding, however Camp Jude at this point is only partially funded for 2024.

Rachel Didychuk , director of community programs with the Medicine Hat YMCA said they are hoping to receive about $20,000 in community donations.

“We have supported 220 campers to this point. Hopeful to have about 20 campers for this summer,” Didychuk said.

“We are just hoping to get this funding so that we are able to continue to have these very positive experiences for kids in our community for summers to come,” she added.

“We have received a lot of heart warming e-mails from parents who’s kids have previously been with Camp Jude.”

Didychuk said there is importance to being able to have this camp available to those who need it.

“This is kind of an alternative experience for these children specifically and we offer those specialized supports so that’s the important piece that we would like the community to understand is this is a specialized opportunity,” Didychuk said.

Those looking to donate can do so by going to the Downtown or South Ridge YMCA.

Donations can also be made online.

Any donation over $10 is eligible for a tax receipt.
