Be aware of mopeds and scooters on Medicine Hat roadways, police say

Motorists driving around Medicine Hat may soon notice they are sharing the road with a lot more mopeds and scooters as the weather warms up.

A lot of the drivers of these vehicles are 14- and 15-year-old youth who have just recently got their class seven licence.

They have to wear a helmet while driving, carry with them a licence and registration at all times, and can’t double up on the moped if they are under the age of 16.

Those with a class seven license also can’t be driving between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m.

Sgt. Stacey Fishley said making sure to give them adequate space is important.

“”There’s going to be mopeds out on the roadway, and because of that, they got to be aware of the traffic congestion with those vehicles on the roadway,” Fishley said.

“The safety thing with mopeds is that they are a slower vehicle. Because of the CCs in them, they don’t go as fast as a motor vehicle. People should be aware of that and use caution when approaching one.”

Mopeds and Scooters have a maximum speed of 70 kilometres per hour, are to be driven on the far right of roadways unless turning left.

If the speed of the vehicle is greater than 50cc or exceeds a 70 kilometres per hour max speed it will be considered a motorcycle and requires a class six drivers licence.
