Medicine Hat Regional Airport will receive $150,000 as part of a new cash injection by the provinicial government aimed at boosting Alberta’s local airport network.

Alberta’s transportation minister Devin Dresshen announced $1.13 million for 10 regional airports on Thursday.

“Regional airports are key assets in supporting the air sector and the movement of people,” Dresshen said from Red Deer.

“This investment will support the growth of Alberta’s regional airports and help restore and develop connections between our regional and international airports.”

Kara Westerlund, vice president at Rural Municipalities of Alberta, said the investments are important to the province’s transportation network outside of its biggest cities.

“Regional airports support economic development and serve as a hub for emergency services for rural Alberta,” Westerlund said.

“The funding provided today will benefit many rural communities and represents a strong step in maintaining Alberta’s rural transportation network.”

The funded projects vary in scope and size depending on the specific needs of each airport, officials said.

The initiatives include exploring airport certification to support scheduled air services, airport commercial development, commercial air services, hangar development and development of strategic business cases to restore regional airports’ positions as primary transportation hubs.

Lethbridge Airport will get $150,000 for a hanger development feasibility study and business case, $120,000 has been set aside for Red Deer Regional Airport’s land development strategy and implementation plan and $140,000 will go to a Canadian border agency facilities study at Grande Prairie Airport.

Six other airports across Alberta will also get varying levels of provincial funding for its projects.
