MEDICINE HAT, AB – An ALERT team seized nearly $65,000 worth of drugs and two 3D-printed handguns during a search of multiple homes in Brooks.

The investigation has not yet led to any formal charges, police said in a news conference in Medicine Hat on Tuesday.

The ALERT organized crime team searched the homes on Oct. 4 as part of a lengthy and still ongoing drug trafficking and firearms investigation.

Drugs seized include:

– 762 grams of methamphetamine;

– 742 grams of cocaine;

– 159 grams of crack cocaine;

– illicit prescription pills

– $2,000 cash was also seized.

The 3D printed guns are currently being tested as part of the investigation.

3D firearms known as ghost guns are coveted by organized crime because they can be illegally obtained, do not have serial numbers, and are difficult to trace.

Ryan Thorburn, staff sergeant at the Medicine Hat Police Service oversees the local ALERT team, said the 3D printed guns are an emerging trend.

“Our team has had several cases in relation to 3D printed firearms and we will continue to work with our partner agencies to address these emerging crime trends,” Thorburn said.

“Part of the next steps of our investigation will be to examine these firearms and determine through ballistics testing if they were used in any other criminal shootings,” Thorburn added.

Thorburn said the police are working with the prosecutor to figure out who to charge.

“We are working with crown council to provide necessary reports and disclosure for charge approvals. Several suspects have been identified but no charges have been laid at this time,” Thorburn said.

“This is an ongoing investigation and they do anticipate laying charges in the next couple of months.”
