MEDICINE HAT, AB – Christmas spirit is making it’s way to the Medicine Hat High School Theatre this Friday, as the MHHS Theatre Company students await spectators for their production of ‘A Christmas Story.’

“It features Ralphie Parker, he’s a main character, he’s a boy on a mission for this (BB) gun, the one true Christmas gift he wants,” says Ellie Cartwright, assistant director of A Christmas Story. “He’s got to go through a lot between all this chaos happening at school and battles with Santa Claus and the elves, it’s just a really good story.”

Cartwright says it can be both heartwarming and funny at different points in the musical. Some of that humour comes from Anders Currah and his character as ‘Old Man.’

“My character is very cartoonish, for sure, a big exaggeration of what a dad is like,” says Currah.

His son Ralphie is the main character played by Mariah Mcouat. Their relationship, like that of a father and son, goes beyond just the spotlight

“Mariah’s just an amazing actor, honestly,” says Currah. “She brings so much life to all the scenes, it’s great.”

“Well, I was going to say the same thing about you,” says Mcouat. “All this enthusiasm you bring into the stage, it makes me want to match your level and have the same type of enthusiasm.”

The class has been working on this production since september. Grade 12 student Makayla Van Leeuwen says the hours of hard work have brought everyone closer together.

“You’re with them so often in the amount of rehearsals that we have, and you just spend so much time with them that you end up getting really close,” Leeuwen explains.

“I’ve watched everyone grow so much as actors and as a cast together,” mentions Cartwright. “So it has been great to see such iconic characters come to life and I think everyone’s really finding that and they’re displaying it in their own awesome way.”

The show runs for the next three Fridays and Saturday’s, at the Medicine Hat High School Theatre.
