Medicine Hat police dog Mulder retires: Part 2

Nov 23, 2023 | 11:42 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Mulder is a specially trained facility dog working with the Medicine Hat Police Service since 2016.

Mulder, trained by Dogs with Wings, provides emotional support and comfort to children and adults who have been victims of violent crimes or tragic circumstances.

Mulder’s handler, Sherry Kuss, emphasizes how Mulder helps victims, especially children, open up about difficult experiences. Mulder is a constant companion, guiding victims through the lengthy justice system process. His calming presence is beneficial not only for the children but also for their families.

Working as a team, Sherry and Mulder engage with victims during their most vulnerable moments, assisting the Medicine Hat Family Crime Unit in investigating cases and bringing justice to families.

Sergeant Darryl Hubich highlights Mulder’s effectiveness in dealing with sensitive and emotional trauma-based crimes, making people feel more comfortable coming forward.

Carrie Stober, a navigation specialist, initiated a campaign for victims to give back to facility dogs.

Children draw pictures or design ties, and these ties become part of Mulder and Athena’s attire during court proceedings. The ties symbolize a connection with the children they have helped.

Carrie also assists victims in navigating the court process, ensuring Mulder is present when a victim testifies.

Mulder’s comforting presence in court helps children feel more at ease, and he is one of the few certified dogs in the province allowed to accompany witnesses during testimony.

The feature describes Mulder’s positive impact, not only in interviews and investigations but also in the court testimony side of things. Mulder’s work has led to hundreds of ties, each representing a child he has assisted. The ties serve as a meaningful connection throughout the legal process.

In summary, Mulder has been a valuable asset to the community, providing crucial support to victims, especially children, during challenging times. The article also expresses hope that Mulder’s successor, Athena, will continue to offer similar opportunities and experiences in the future.
