Tigers double up Rebels for third straight win

Sep 30, 2023 | 10:27 AM

Red Deer, AB – Despite trailing early in the first period the Medicine Hat Tigers persevered for their third straight win to start the season after a 4-2 victory at the Peavey Mart Centrium Friday night against the Red Deer Rebels.

The first period started off on the wrong foot for the Tigers as they gave up the first eight shots and Hunter Mayo would get the Rebels on the board first at 3:21 on a errant shot that fooled Tigers starter Evan May (Nanaimo, BC).

But right after the goal from Rebels, Medicine Hat would finally register shots towards Red Deer starter Kyle Kelsey and would be rewarded as Shane Smith (Cessford, AB) would bang home his third goal in as many games from Brayden Boehm (Nanaimo, BC) to tied things up at 1-1 at 7:06. Five minutes and 29 seconds later the Tigers would continue their push back and take the lead as Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, BC) would eventually be the last man to chip away his first of the season from Tyler MacKenzie (Red Deer, AB) & Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, YT). The Tigers would experience a late Rebels power play but were able to kill it off and help the road side maintain their lead going into the 1st intermission.

The second period would see ample chances for the Tigers to add into their lead, including a pair of power plays but couldn’t solve Kyle Kelsey until late in the frame with a little luck and a bounce as Cayden Lindstrom (Chetwynd, BC) would bank his second in as many games at 14:08 to give the Tigers a two-goal advantage. Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary, AB) & Josh Van Mulligen (Medicine Hat, AB) would benefit with assists.

he Tigers would take that 3-1 to the final frame.

Off to the 3rd where the Rebels would push back looking for momentum and would find some in the form of their 4th power play of the game and Mats Lindgren would get his first of the season beating May to make it a 3-2 margin. But late in the 3rd the Tigers would get a power play of their own and Cayden Lindstrom would outwait Kyle Kelsey at the side of the Rebel net and slide home his 2nd of the night and third of the season.

Evan May would stand tall making 37 saves including a couple of great chances late with the extra attacker for the Rebels but it would not be enough as the Tigers hold off the Rebels 4-2.

The Tigers would get outshot 39-33 but Evan May would get his third straight win making 37 stops in the victory, while the Tigers special teams would go 1-for-3 on the power play while the penalty kill ends up going 4-for-5.

Next up for the Tigers is a home affair with the Saskatoon Blades Saturday night. Game-time is set for 7 PM.
