Wildfire of unknown origin burns several acres along Industrial Avenue SE

MEDICINE HAT, AB — It was all hands on deck as firefighters worked to extinguish a brush fire on Industrial Avenue s.e. that started around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Crews from Medicine Hat and Cypress County were assisted by city police while parks department staff worked to cut trees in the path of the fire, which was west of the old IXL industries site.

The battle was made harder when the wind picked up; crews didn’t get everything out until midnight last night.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but it blackened between 5 to 10 acres, and consumed some old growth trees.

Fire crews also had to put out some hot spots in a grass fire in the 1500 block of 11th Avenue NE at around the same time – after embers from an earlier fire flared at that location.
