MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Cypress Rod & Custom Car Club is gearing up for its annual show and shine event on Saturday.

About 200 cars and vehicles are expected at the Medicine Hat College south parking lot from all over Alberta, some from Saskatchewan and there may even be some from Montana.

Randy Russell will have his 1971 Chevelle in the show. He’s one of the co-organizers and says the prestige of the classics is a huge part of the enduring popularity of show and shines.

“The car shows in general are people who love cars and love to see the old cars coming back, what the restoration process is,” he says. “Some cars are garage finds which literally nothing’s been done to them, they put some oil and gas in, start it up and drive. Some cars are very high-dollar cars, they’re polished they’re … it’s a work of art. The old cars are a work of art. The new stuff is all plastic, the old stuff is all steel.”

The club’s show is close to three decades old, says Russell, and some years they get cars that no one has ever seen before and there are always old favourites returning.

He says owners will be happy to talk about and answer questions about their rides.

Between 8 a.m. and noon you can register your vehicle for the show for $10. The show, free to attend, is from noon to 4 p.m.
