‘A good time to be hot’: Mavericks win playoff opener
MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Mavericks struck first in their first-round playoff series, routing the Regina Red Sox 11-3 on Monday at Athletic Park to go up 1-0 in the series.
The Mavericks ended the regular season second in the East Division of the Western Canadian Baseball League. What ended as a successful regular season started a bit rocky but the team has a new sense of confidence now.
“It’s been a bit of a roller-coaster. We started off the year, you know, not the greatest team, but, you know, just after we got to know each other a little bit more, it made a big difference,” says Johnny Vulcano, who hit an inside-the-park homerun on Monday. “Like halfway through the season, after the all-star break, we kind of, we started playing a little better and I think now we’re one of the hottest teams in the league. So, yeah, it’s definitely a good time to be hot.”
