Mustard Seed feeling strain of high temperatures

Jul 25, 2023 | 1:28 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s been a scorcher this week and especially the past couple of days.

Temperatures reached near 40 C on Monday, with highs above 34 C this past weekend.

For those able to stay inside in an air-conditioned unit, the heat can often be avoided. However, for those without a home or unable to afford air conditioning, the heat can pose real health risks.

Many Hatters flock to The Mustard Seed to seek partial relief, refuel with food, and cool down with water. But this extra demand on The Mustard Seed means more supplies are needed.

Andrew Mclean is the basic services manager at Medicine Hat’s Mustard Seed.

He says the summer creates challenges different than the cold months. During the winter, warm clothes can go a lot further than a bottle of water would in the summer, and air conditioning can prove costly.

But many things contribute to the increased operating costs.

“We have persons consuming more water. Sunscreen and we have to be distributing hats to keep people cool because this, this sort of weather can bring about dehydration, extreme fatigue and exhaustion. And we want to combat that by ensuring persons are catered to properly,” he says. “We want to thank Medicine Hat for the continuous support. Our motto here is Hope Grows Here, and because of your generous donation, the mustard seed Medicine Hat has been able to provide support to our vulnerable citizens.”

Mclean says The Mustard Seed will accept donations at both the Allowance Avenue and shelter locations.
