Special Olympics Medicine Hat seeks volunteers

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Special Olympics Medicine Hat will need volunteers when the city hosts the 2026 Canada Summer Games. But before then, they need volunteers now to help get the athletes to the games and for day-to-day operations.

Special Olympics provides the chance for people with intellectual disabilities to participate in sports they may not otherwise get to.

The group wants to build its volunteer base before registration for fall sports like bowling, swimming, basketball and floor hockey opens later next month.

Registrar and volunteer coordinator Jaelynn Wiest says one of the great things about being a Special Olympics volunteer is that experience with the sport will help but isn’t necessary.

“It could be as simple as you’re coming and lifting balls for bowling, being able to get the balls from here to there for some of our athletes who happen to have more of a physical mobility concern,” Wiest explains. “Compared to maybe you like coaching and you’re like, ‘Hey I’m really interested in swimming I know a lot about swimming.’ So you’re in the pool coaching our athletes how to swim. So depending on what your comfort level is.”

She says some athletes take it seriously and have gone to national and world competitions, but some are just there for fun, community and friendships.

Wiest has been volunteering with Special Olympics Medicine Hat for about eight years and says she loves it and hopes more people get involved.

She says she was nervous when she started helping with bocce ball back then, not knowing much about the sport.

“The athletes make it so fun and it was really great. That could be your experience too,” she says.

The group is also looking for volunteers at the committee level to help behind the scenes.
