MEDICINE HAT, AB – There’s nothing like a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer day.

Ten-year-old Lane Hager is a hard-working girl with the drive to make her lemonade stand a summer-time success. Running a lemonade stand can be a profitable business for students looking to make some extra cash over the summer.

Lane uses her youthful energy to jump up and down, holding a hand-drawn advertising a glass of her ice-cold lemonade for only a loonie at her stand on Terrace Drive NE.

“Most of the time I go around with my sign and I jump up and go like ‘come get some lemonade’ and then mostly lots of people come,” she says.

Lane can be found on her front lawn selling lemonade most summer days from noon to 6 p.m. with a small stand, yellow jug and welcoming smile.

“So I thought if I just save up my money and do a lemonade stand, that will make it funner. Like I can go to the mall with my mom, I can go places with my dad and actually buy stuff with my own money,” explains Lane.

She started her small lemonade stand last summer. She does most of the work setting up the stand and making the lemonade, with a little help from her parents.

“It teaches the kids the value of a dollar. You go to the store and kids say ‘I want this,’ ‘I want that.’ Well it’s nice to want things but for a 10-year-old to be able to say ‘I got this’ and fork over their own money, very, very proud moment,” says Lane’s father Mike.

Lane says her hard work has paid off. She has been able to buy herself new clothes, shoes and books with her profits.

“Well I knew that if I made money then I got to go to fun places with my family, get fancy things and be able to do more stuff,” says Lane.

Mike says the stand has become more than just a business for his daughter. It’s something she looks forward to opening when the summer comes along.

“She meets a lot of people who come back, everyone always has nice things to say. She comes out and she has fun. She’ll be dancing in the yard, her friends will be dancing with her in the yard, there’s always music playing, just having a great time,” he says.

As for the lemonade, Lane guarantees its sweet taste is the best on the block.

“A lot of kids came by and said ‘this is really good, it tastes like it’s from real lemonade,’ like really squeezed lemonades. It’s really sweet and it’s just amazing. You’ll love it.”
