County of Grande Prairie declares local state of emergency due to wildfires

May 5, 2023 | 9:13 PM

The County of Grande Prairie has declared a local state of emergency and activated the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership (GPREP) in response to wildfires north of the Wapiti River.

A combined fire response is underway and an Alberta Emergency Alert has been issued.

All residents in the area of Township Road 710 south to the Wapiti River and between Highway 40 and Range Road 73 must evacuate immediately.

Evacuees are being told to use their nearest Range Road north to get to the City, and then register at the reception centre in Bonnets Energy Centre.

The County is reminding evacuees of several things:

  • Bring all important, documents, medication, and supplies, along with food and water for at least three days.
  • Avoid over-purchasing supplies, as a sufficient amount is available.
  • Remain calm while driving and be cautious, check highway statuses on 511 Alberta.

At this time, City and County residents located southeast of Highway 40 are at no risk.

Smoke from numerous fires across northwestern Alberta is blowing into both the City and County area causing a reduction in visibility.
