Cases of whooping cough identified in Medicine Hat
MEDICINE HAT, AB–Alberta Health Services says an outbreak of pertussis (whopping cough) is now present in Medicine Hat.
The outbreak was first declared in the South Zone on January 26, 2023. There are 146 identified cases, up from 126 on April 20th, 2023.
In addition to Medicine Hat, cases are also present in Lethbridge and smaller communities within the health zone. They have been identified in schools, churches, and other community sites where children gather for various lessons.
Public Health says it is unable to identify linkages between most of the recent cases, indicating there is likely more disease circulating in communities that is not being reported.
