MEDICINE HAT, AB – Winter is coming back to Alberta.

Winter storm and snowfall warnings issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada on Monday range from the Hinton area south along the Rocky Mountains to the U.S. border and then east to Saskatchewan.

The Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield and Cypress Hills Provincial Park-Foremost areas are under winter storm warnings.

The warning calls for a long duration winter storm with snow and blowing snow to begin later on Monday.

“Heavy snowfall will start falling near the British Columbia border this evening and spread east overnight toward the Cypress Hills. By Tuesday night a total of 20 to 40 cm is likely, with the highest amounts occurring near Waterton Lakes National Park,” the warning reads. “In the plains from Lethbridge east towards Highway 1, snowfall amounts of 15 to 30 cm are expected by Tuesday night. These areas will also see strong, gusty winds causing poor visibility due to blowing snow.”

The storm is expected to gradually come to an end by Tuesday night.

The weather services suggests postponing non-essential travel as the snow will reduce visibility and make travel difficult.

A winter strom warning is also in effect for the Maple Creek area.

Environment Canada’s Brooks-Strathmore-Vulcan area is under a snowfall warning. Around 15 to 25 centimetres of snow is expected by Tuesday before the snow stops falling in the afternoon or evening.
