Ecole St.John Paul II School celebrates Pink Shirt Day

Feb 15, 2023 | 4:52 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Ecole St. John Paul II School took its stand against bullying today.

Students wore pink shirts, were taught about bullying and accepted a kindness bench from Blue IMP.

Robert Dumanowski, Principal of Ecole St. John Paul II, says the kindness bench donated to the school is more than a token.

“It’s a reminder for all of us as we walk by it everyday, and we see those words be kind, that we have our part to play in creating a better world and a better environment for everyone. It starts in the school, and it moves out in the community – and dare I say world,” said Dumanowski.

The bench is bright pink and has the words “be kind” on it.

During classes today, students had conversations, saw a slideshow and participated in some anti-bullying activities.

“As a school, we recognize pink shirt day for what it is. But, more importantly, the students had an opportunity to reflect on what their words and actions mean not just today – but everyday, in a school environment,” said Dumanowski.

Pink Shirt Day is about “the bigger context of life, that we are present in the moment, but also there for others – to treat others with kindness, compassion, respect, being thoughtful and be mindful for others,” said the principal.

Owen Melish, who is in Grade 6, says the teachers also gave tools for how to respond to bullying.

“You know it’s Pink Shirt Day. You want to recognize those being bullied and the bullies, so you can figure out that and tell the teachers and make sure they’re not being bullied,” said Melish.

The principal says the day “is a reminder that we can and should be kind.”
