MEDICINE HAT, AB – Another top manager at City Hall is leaving their post.

Brian Mastel, managing director of public services, has announced his resignation from the City of Medicine Hat, according to a news release. Mastel, who joined the city’s administration team nearly 11 years ago, will remain in the role until the end of January.

Mastel says the passion and commitment that the city has for the community “is beyond incredible, and the opportunity to work with talented, multi-disciplinary teams has been very rewarding.”

City manager Glenn Feltham says Mastel “has been a steady force within the city organization through what have been some very transformative years.”

Mastel joined the City of Medicine Hat in January 2012 as general manager of finance, later became commissioner of corporate services and then managing director of public services in 2019.

The city says that during his time here, Mastel was involved in many historic projects and initiatives, including efforts to reduce the city’s reliance on unpredictable commodity revenues to fund municipal services, a significant revamp of the treasury and investment management, the implementation of the city’s current enterprise resource planning system and the introduction of transit on demand. he was also involved in major capital projects such as the expansion of the then-named Family Leisure Centre (now Big Marble Go Centre), as well as the Veiner Centre rebuild, expansion, and transition to Kerby.

The city says a recruitment process for a new managing director will begin “in due course.”
