Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education wanting to consolidate 3 schools

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The public will be getting a chance to learn more about plans to consolidate three local schools in Medicine Hat.

The Catholic Board has a three-year capital plan which would see the consolidation of St. Michael’s, St. Francis Xavier and St. Mary’s School. This submission would include a new theatre and physical literacy space. The new building would replace the existing St. Francis Xavier School, and French immersion students from Ecole St. John Paul II would also move to the new campus to allow for K – 12 French immersion in one location.

Residents are encouraged to come out to Holy Family Parish at 1451 Strachan Road S.E. tomorrow from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. to learn more about the project.

“So, we will have a presentation of what the new ask is and our revised capital submission, and we’ll be engaging in a thought exchange process where the participants will be able to share their ideas, and also have an opportunity to hear how others feel about the project. Once all of that work is done, we will be providing a report back to our stakeholders, to share what we heard, as a result of that meeting,” says Dr. Dwayne Zarichny, superintendent of schools.

Zarichny adds, if the plan is approved by the government, architects would be invited to submit a plan for the new school, and engagement with staff, students, and parents would be done, to make sure their opinions are heard. As of right now, the consolidation plan is only a request to the government, which will cost an estimated $56,180,736.
