Hurricane Ian strengthens into major Category 3 storm
HAVANA (AP) — Hurricane Ian strengthened into a major hurricane early Tuesday as it barreled toward Cuba on a track to hit Florida’s west coast as early as Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center defines a major hurricane as a Category 3 storm or higher, meaning maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph (178 km/h).
As of 2:30 a.m. EDT (0630 GMT), Hurricane Ian was about 85 miles (135 kilometers) east of the western tip of Cuba, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 km/h). It was traveling north-northwest at 13 mph (20 km/h).
