MEDICINE HAT, AB – A documentary about the Afghan war is looking for volunteer actors for scenes being filmed near Medicine Hat next week.

Fallen Heroes: Their Journey Home is a film about the repatriation of fallen soldiers during the conflict in Afghanistan, the origin of the ramp ceremonies and the subsequent Highway of Heroes that paid tribute to Canadians on their final journey home.

“During the war in Afghanistan, there was an outpouring by Canadians of support and appreciation of our military,” said Robert Curtin, the film’s director and co-producer. “I think it’s important that we not forget that sacrifice.”

Curtin says he is hoping to help Canadians understand what the military went through during the 14 years Canadians were stationed in Afghanistan.

During the time in the war-torn country, 158 Canadian military personnel were killed, as well as seven civilians. Curtin and his co-producer, Karen Storwick, have been interviewing military personnel for the past six and a half years to gain insight into their time in Afghanistan.

“What is remarkable is that to a soldier, they are intensely proud of showing Canadian values in Afghanistan, and doing things that are to the Canadian standard,” said Curtin. “That meant in some cases we were not as aggressive as our American counterparts, we did things to try and help the Afghan people, that was not common up to that time, and at the same time we were prepared to protect people with violence if necessary.”

The segments being filmed in Sandy Point Park on Aug. 22 and 23 depict events that took place in the Panjwayi region of Afghanistan in 2006. The film is looking for people to play up to 30 soldiers, as well as people who might play members of the Taliban.

The project has the support of the Canadian military and will be filming additional scenes at CFB Suffield on Sept. 7 and 8. Volunteers will be needed for those shoots as well.

More information about the film and how to volunteer can be found on the project’s website.
